Police have confirmed there was no body found in the car recovered from the Missouri River on Monday. Officials say the car was reported stolen in Overland Park Sunday evening.

Crews searched all day for a vehicle that drove into the river Sunday night. It was recovered at about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Fire crews were called to 1000 River Front Road for water rescue after reports of a vehicle into the river the previous night.

The call came around 9 p.m. Sunday, and three boats were in the water conducting a search. Witnesses said they saw a vehicle drive down the embankment and into the river.

Kansas City Fire Chief Paul Berardi said there were tire tracks leading into the water. Crews used sonar in an attempt to find the vehicle.

Berardi said they tagged a potential location of the vehicle.

The Missouri Highway Patrol brought in a dive team Monday morning to search the areas KCFD marked Sunday night.

Authorities used sonar technology and found two large items about 11 feet underwater. They both could be the car.

"I'd be surprised if they didn't find more than one car out here," said Darin Snapp, Kansas City Police spokesperson.

Snapp explained sometimes car thieves will use the river as a dumping ground.

Snapp said officers took statements from two sets of witnesses. He said the car was moving erratically and someone who was driving it would've had to swerve around a couple boulders. However, the witnesses did not see if anyone was actually in the car.

The highway patrol dive team started using sonar to see if the object in the water had shifted overnight. Troopers then used grappling hooks to try and feel where the objects were. They will suit up and dive in later.

Authorities believe the car floated for about 15 minutes or an eighth of a mile before sinking to the bottom.

Firefighters said if anyone was in the car at this point it would be very difficult to survive.
