SHAWNEE, Kan. - One person remains in serious condition after being injured in a house fire in Shawnee, Kan.
It happened just before 1 p.m. on Saturday, near 70th and Nieman Road.
Firefighters found the woman in the kitchen of the home. She was taken to KU Medical Center's Burn Unit with critical injuries.
Neighbors say it's an eye-opening situation. "You see this on TV and the news all the time in different neighborhoods, and then all of a sudden here it is across the street from your home," Kip Valentine said. "You feel bad for them especially this close to the holidays."
The cause of the fire is under investigation; however, investigations have learned the smoke detector inside the home was not working. They say the battery was not connected.
