KANSAS CITY, Kan. - You'll now see two boats on the water belonging to the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office. The new boat launched on Saturday at Wyandotte County Lake after getting a brand new paint job.
This boat was first used by the federal government in the recovery efforts following the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. Lt. Kelli Bailiff said the boat helped search for wreckage in Texas and Louisiana.
Now the boat will also help the Sheriff's Office launch a new water safety policy.
Deputies already inspected boats on area waters, but now they will place a sticker on the back of the boats that pass inspection. The measure comes after recent drownings. They call it an effort to increase water safety.
If you'd like to set up a free boat inspection, contact the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office.
