Caught on Camera: Elderly woman robbed as her daughter watches helplessly in real-time from iPad

Robbers posed as roof repairmen, stole jewelry

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- - An 87-year-old Florida woman was robbed on Tuesday inside her home as her daughter watched it all unfold in real-time helplessly from iPad.

The robbery happened in West Palm Beach.

The victim's daughter, Lynn Foley, said she had installed cameras inside the home of her mother to keep an eye one her when she was at work. But when she flipped on her iPad, she saw two men robbing her mother. All she could do was call for help, hope for the best and watch it all unfold.

"It's almost like you're paralyzed. You just don't know what to do," said Foley, the victims' daughter.

The victim, Vaiden Jean Cannon,  was approached by the men who claimed they were roof repairmen. As one of the men began to quote the elderly woman, the other can be seen sneaking back to her room, robbing Cannon without her even knowing it.

"I was like, 'Oh my God, someone is in her house robbing her and I know she's there.' I wanted to make sure she was okay," said Foley.

Foley called her brother who then called 911.

By the time anyone showed up, it was too late. The men were gone and so was the jewelry.
"That's just the way I am. If you want to come in, okay. But I'm going to quit that," said Vaiden Jean Cannon, the victim.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office urges residents to never let anyone they don't know inside their home.

"I think they're scumbags. That's horrible to prey on elderly people," said Foley.

The daughter of the victim, Lynn Foley, said she is just thankful her mother did not get hurt.

Vaiden Jean Cannon said she has learned her lesson.

"If someone else knocks on my door, I don't care how clean they seem, they're not coming in," said Cannon.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said it did not have statistics available about how often similar crimes happen. A spokesperson said they are working with the family to use the video to catch the men seen in the video.
