Republican incumbent Kevin Yoder has won re-election in the 3rd District in Kansas and dashed the best hopes Democrats had for winning a congressional race this year.

The 40-year-old congressman defeated challenger Jay Sidie in Tuesday’s election despite a strong push by Democrats to make the race competitive.

Sidie is a 59-year-old former commodities trader from Mission Woods. He was a political unknown when the race started.

Democrats sensed GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump would struggle in the Kansas City-area district. They also sought to tie Yoder to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback amid a backlash over the state’s budget problems.

A national Democratic committee spent nearly $2.2 million on ads to help Sidie. A Republican super PAC answered with $804,000 in spending.

Yoder was first elected to Congress in 2010.
