Mark Holland elected mayor of KCK

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Mark Holland will be the new mayor of Kansas City, Kan.

Voters chose him over fellow commissioner Ann Murguia with 56 percent of the vote. With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Holland received 9,323 votes to Murguia's 7,187.

"Let's give a hand to the future of Wyandotte County because we're headed in the right direction," Holland said in his victory speech.

The mayor-elect has been a preacher at Trinity Community Church, a United Methodist Congregation, since 1999.

Holland, a father of four, said he won't be quitting his day job and will continue to preach on Sunday mornings.

This election represented a new choice for area voters -- Mayors Carol Marinovich and Joe Reardon had ran virtually unopposed for years.
