Mayor Sly James meets with Vice President Joe Biden to talk gun control

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The United States Conference of Mayors kicked off in Washington DC, Thursday. Several topics are on the agenda, including job creation, the fiscal cliff and gun control.

Mayor Sly James will join Vice President Joe Biden and other mayors to talk about gun control. Biden was tasked to put together a recommendation for ways to reduce gun violence. He and President Barack Obama presented the plan Wednesday.

The plan includes 23 executive orders aimed at research, mental health, background checks and increasing police and counselor presence in schools.

Other recommendations include criminal background checks on all gun sales, including private sales, as well as a ban on military-style semi-automatic weapons, limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds and strengthening penalties for gun trafficking.

While the administration urged congress to act, it's unclear if a bill with these recommendations will become a priority for lawmakers who are under pressure to deal with the upcoming deadline for the debt ceiling.
