Family-owned bookstores on the University of Kansas and Kansas State University campuses will shut down Thursday.

Varney’s in Manhattan and Jayhawk Bookstore in Lawrence will clear out merchandise by Thursday at 5 p.m.

The announcement is sad not only for its owners, but also for customers.

"Everyone knows the Jayhawk Bookstore and knows the commercials,” said KU senior John Crenshaw. "It's a staple, you know, on campus."

The stores have a long history on both campuses, dating back to 1890.

The Levine family took over both in the 90s. Owner Jeff Levine said making the decision to close was heartbreaking.

“My dad who is in his 80s comes here every day. This is his home. His name on the outside of this building,” said Levine. “This, is very rough."

Levine cites low textbook sales, changing buying habits and increased competition for why the small business struggled.

"We've done a lot of things to basically advance ourselves in that arena, but it just wasn't enough,” he explained. “We're really proud of what we've done, and we walk away from this knowing we've helped out our communities."

The family is holding an auction at Varney’s in Manhattan on July 13 at 9 a.m. Computers, merchandise and other fixtures will be up for sale.
