OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Investigators believe a cigarette may be to blame for a house fire in the 11100 block of W. 132nd Court Saturday afternoon.
The Overland Park and Olathe Fire Departments responded to the scene.
Firefighters found heavy smoke from the front and back of the home, according to a news release from Overland Park. Fire units found flames on the deck in the back of the home.
Authorities said crews started battling the blaze while others looked for occupants. Authorities reported all occupants got out of the home safely. According to authorities, a resident of the home said she had been smoking on the back deck about an hour before the fire was reported. She was not home at the time of the fire.
Overland Park fire crews said the fire, which likely started on the deck, also burned the basement of the home.
Authorities are still investigating the official cause of the fire.
Fire damage was limited to the deck and a small part of the basement, but the rest of the home had significant smoke damage.
