Woman in critical condition after two-alarm house fire in Leawood

LEAWOOD, Kan. - One woman is in critical condition after a two-alarm house fire at 95th and Lee in Leawood.

The flames bursting out of the home and smoke pouring down the block blinded neighbors and made it difficult to breathe.

When crews got to the scene, they heard someone in the back making noise. Once they got inside, it appeared a woman wasn't breathing.

They performed CPR to revive her. She was then taken to a local hospital.

Dozens of neighbors lined the street to learn the fate of the woman injured in the fire. One neighbor said his son was shaken by the scene.

"He's rattled because he can see in that home. That could be his home and just yesterday I was checking the batteries on our smoke detector," Mark Read said. "We've installed sprinkler systems residential systems in our home just for this kind of thing because the stakes are so high."

A  Leawood Fire Department spokesman said two firefighters were injured battling the fire, but their injuries were described as minor.

No word yet on what caused the fire.

SKYTRACKER pilots said smoke was visible from three to five miles away.
