SHAWNEE, Kan. - Firefighters are monitoring a compost fire near a methane plant at the Deffenbaugh landfill in western Johnson County.
Fire crews were called out after 7 p.m. to the landfill west of Interstate 435 between Johnson Drive and Holiday on a reported compost fire.
The first crews were able to locate the fire, but initially kept a distance due to concerns about the fire's proximity to a methane plant.
As of 7:30 p.m., Shawnee Police were blocking a portion of Johnson Drive south of the landfill due to poor visibility and emergency personnel.
A Shawnee Fire Department spokesperson said that as of 8 p.m., crews had been able to shut off the flow of gas to the plant.
