Shawnee Mission East students dedicate soccer match to Tyler Rathbun

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Johnson County high school is remembering one of its own through the game of soccer.

Saturday night, Shawnee Mission East and the Sporting Blue Valley club team will play the Tyler Rathbun Memorial Soccer Game.

Tyler died last month after an ATV crash. He was only 17 years old.

There's no fee to get into the soccer game, but students are selling T-shirts and cheerleaders will be passing around buckets for donations that will go towards the Rathbun Memorial Fund.

"He's the kind of kid you want to be around. He's a special kid -- they don't come around too often. He was great to be around, and I'm not at all surprised how he's affected everyone," Shawnee Mission East senior Clint Dunn said of Tyler.

Kickoff for the soccer match is at 7 p.m. at the Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium at UMKC.
