LENEXA, Kan. - Detectives are investigating the first homicides of the year in Lenexa, Kan.
Two people were killed and a third injured in a shooting near Hallet Street and 84th Terrace around 10:10 p.m. Wednesday.
The man who was shot and injured called police. He wasn’t sure exactly where he was, because he was not familiar with the area. But, authorities said they were able to use GPS technology to locate the victim.
When police arrived, they found the man outside of a house. He was transported to an area hospital.
When they entered the house, they found two victims dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
Investigators spent Thursday morning interviewing the injured man.
The deaths caught people who live there by surprise.
“I started to hear more and more sirens,” neighbor Caroline Ewing said. “You just don’t see that many police officers coverage in one spot very often.”
Ewing came home last night to find police sirens and lights piercing through the usually quiet Hallet Street.
Investigators with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office helped Lenexa detectives gather evidence at the crime scene.
Ewing has lived on this block since she was a baby. She’s lived in war-torn parts of Africa and in big cities like London. The news of a double homicide near her backyard is shocking, but it didn’t shatter her sense of security.
“I don’t think that this is any reason not to enjoy to feel safe in the community but remember to be aware,” Ewing said.
Police said they are not looking for a suspect and will not release the names of the victims until their families are notified.
