8-year-old girl killed when driver fleeing from police slams into van

Mother, two brothers injured

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - An 8-year-old girl was killed Wednesday night when a man fleeing from police ran a red light and crashed into a van driven by her mother.

Kansas City, Kan., police were conducting a routine traffic stop with a black sedan near 63rd and Parallel around 9:30 p.m. After the officer spoke with the driver, the car sped off, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol, who is investigating the crash.

The suspect ran a red light at 63rd and Leavenworth and slammed into a van, pushing the vehicle carrying a woman and her three children into a nearby yard. The fleeing driver's car also crashed in the yard. The driver tried to run from the scene but was quickly apprehended.

Jasmine Rodriguez, 8, was killed in the crash. Her mother and 7-year-old brother were injured and her 9-year-old brother was seriously injured.

On Friday, prosecutors charged Tyrone Murphy, Jr., of KCK, with first degree murder in the crash.
