Parents devastated Tots 'n' Tales Montessori School to close in KCK

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Dozens of Kansas City, Kan., families don't have much time to find a new daycare, after finding out Wednesday that Tots 'n' Tales will shut down in just five weeks.

The Montessori school has been a Wyandotte County staple for decades. Some of the teachers have been there twenty years.

Parents are furious, writing in to management company, TFI Community Childcare Inc., who bought the facility five years ago.

They say enrollment fell because of poor management by the company. Before then, the school had been successful for decades.

Inga Paul, one of the devastated mothers, read us a letter she wrote to TFI.

"To TFI, my child has become a number, a cash cow if you will," she said.

The thought of Tots 'n' Tales closing brings Michelle Hereford to tears.

"My 2-year-old boy that I was about to move here is going to be robbed of the experience," she said.

The facility has capacity for 167 kids. Currently, 96 are enrolled. TFI officials confirm similar numbers and issues at their Lawrence daycare, Sunshine Acres, which will also close.

TFI officials say the recession is to blame for low enrollment, and they agree the decision to close is heartbreaking. The company took over Tots 'n' Tales in 2008.
