KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Two men are in police custody after a homeowner was shot on Thursday morning when car thieves in Kansas City, Kan., targeted a car running unattended in a driveway.
Police investigated a shooting in the 7400 block of Oakland after receiving calls on a aggravated burglary.
Officer Thomas Tomasic said the suspects and the homeowner exchanged gunfire before the suspects exited the car and ran off.
"We are unsure if either of the suspects were hit," Tomasic said.
Police investigators used a K-9 unit and followed foot steps in the snow to the Legend Oaks Apartments. After knocking on several doors, police found two men who matched the suspect description inside of one of the apartments. Police took the men into custody.
News of the apprehension gave Lavel Ferrell some relief after he and his family heard gunfire and saw bullets whipping through their home.
"Some bullets came thought the house, ricocheted off a couple of walls. I told the kids to get down. I'm a little frustrated; a little ticked off about it," Ferrell said.
One bullet went through his stepson's bedroom window, his daughter's wall and landed on the floor of his master bathroom. Ferrell is thankful that no one in his home was shot.
"We'll get through this, no one was hurt, so we'll get through it," Ferrell added.
Ferrell said he understands why his neighbor used his gun to defend his home and property. He was happy to see him return home Thursday afternoon. He'd been shot in both legs.
Police have not released any information about the two men taken into custody.
