The University of Kansas School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine invited Joshua Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, to speak on Monday.

Horwitz spoke at Clendening Auditorium at KUMC on the topic of “A Risk-Based Approach to Reducing Gun Violence in Kansas.”

Natalie Lutz, director of communications at the University of Kansas Medical Center, said the event was scheduled before the Orlando shooting. Lutz sent a statement to 41 Action News that read:

“The University of Kansas Medical Center is an academic medical center that is training medical students, nurses and health professionals to become the healthcare providers of tomorrow.

The Kansas Board of Regents currently has a policy in place to guide us as we develop our own policies in relation to how to implement the law that will permit guns on campus in July 2017. We will be working over the next several months to explore various ways to make our campus as safe as possible.

As an academic institution, we often have speakers with differing viewpoints. Today’s speaker is one of many who will be lending a voice to this topic.

This issue is part of a national trend, and we hope to learn from other states that are also implementing these types of laws.

This presentation was intended to be an internal Family Medicine Grand Rounds discussion, and it is a coincidence that it is occurring so soon after the tragic shooting in Florida. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their families in Orlando.”
