Right now those with the Lawrence Police Department want to over-hire 17 officers to help with the shortage of manpower.

The department said it’s expecting 20 officers to retire in the next two years. The over-hire of 17 positions would cost roughly $1,267,061.

The Lawrence Police Department must go through the city commission to get the funds to hire more people. The city commission is meeting Tuesday night at 5:45 inside City Hall to talk about this issue.
