OLATHE, Kan. - Monday, the fight continues over a proposed development at West 143rd Street and South Pflumm Road in Olathe.
Nearby homeowners are not pleased with plans for hundreds of homes and businesses to be built on the large plot of land.
For nearly 20 years, the property at that intersection has been at the center of proposals, arguments and even court cases.
Adjacent homeowners say the latest Wheatley Hills Plan isn't a good fit.
The developer is proposing 246 homes and 13 businesses be constructed on site.
The land sits underneath the flight path for airplanes flying into Johnson County Executive Airport.
Most neighbors are worried about the traffic impacts in the area.
In previous meetings, city planners said 2,400 additional vehicle trips will be added each day if the project is approved.
They also worry about having retail so close.
"Do we like having the open country? Of course we do. Do we expect it to stay like this forever? No. But we would support a housing development appropriate to the neighborhood without commercial development. We don't need commercial here," Joe McMillian, a long-time area homeowner, said.
The developer's attorney said the developer has already scaled back some of the housing, eliminated a gas station and promised no big box retailers.
Monday's meeting is at 7 p.m. at Olathe City Hall.
