OLATHE, Kan. - The fourth annual Give 'N Get Coat and Shoe Exchange at the Prince of Peace Church proved to be the largest give-a-way so far for a team of determined teens..
Six Prince of Peace Grade School alumni started the donation drive four years ago, and even though they are all juniors at St. James Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas, they continue to put on the event each year at the Prince of Peace Church at 16000 W. 143rd. Street in Olathe.
The winter essentials give-away is run completely by the students and grows each year. Last year the students and their adult volunteers were able to give away over 2000 winter apparel items. Participants are encouraged to bring their unneeded coats, shoes and scarves and shop for free items in the store.
Jackson McElroy is one of the six founding members. He said each year he's impressed with the donations and the turnout.
"Every year we get more and more donations. And people from all walks of life come in and shop in our store. It feels really good to help people," McElroy said.
The list of items given away rage from winter coats, shoes, hats, gloves and scarves to blankets and purses. Items not given away during the one day event will be donated to other organizations that help those in need.
