Community remembers Overland Park couple killed after teen runs stop sign

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Overland Park couple Norman and Norma Russell died after a 19-year-old driver ran a stop sign and crashed into them.

According to the police report, the driver was heading south on Mastin and missed the stop sign, slamming into the couple's car. The accident left tire marks and knocking down this stop sign.

We reached out to the family of the victims and they asked for privacy at this time.

We did some investigating and found Mr. Russell used to be a barber at Gentlemen's West.  He opened the barber shop with his brother back in the 50s.

Russell retired in 1999, but that didn't stop him from coming in and visiting the new owner and his former clients.

"We have customers always asking about him," current owner Andrew Enyeart said. "He was a well-liked guy."

A customer called and let the barbershop know about the accident.

"They were always driving around doing things all day," Enyeart said.

Enyeart had nothing but good things to say about Norma as well.

"She was a real nice lady," he said.

Police are still working on the case. Currently, no charges have been filed against the driver.
