Independent comic book artists gather for "Independents Day" in Overland Park, Kan.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Is your favorite summer read a comic book?

There's nothing wrong with that.

More than 30 local comic book writers and illustrators met Saturday at Elite Comics in Overland Park, Kan., for "Independents Day"

The day celebrates local, creative talent amongst independent comic writers who don't see themselvesa s the average comic writer.

They see "comics" as a work of expression that doesn't always include Spiderman, Iron Man or Batman.

"You know with independent comics, there's a broader audience you can reach, it's a very specific demographic that's wanting to look at guys in tights hitting each other. Now you can tell any kind of story you want to. You can be a western or romance comic," comic book writer and illustrator Jeremy Haun said.
