Authorities say 62-year-old George Dudley was at the courthouse with personnel from Larned State Hospital for a hearing around 10:15 a.m. when he escaped.
Dudley was not in handcuffs in the courtroom because he was no longer treated as a criminal, but treated as a patient at Larned State Hospital.
Officials say two hospital staff members left him alone briefly. When one went to the hospital’s van and the other went to the bathroom, Dudley walked out of the courthouse, past security.
Dudley is described as a white male wearing a light-colored polo and jeans.
His original sentence had ended in 2006, but he was deemed too dangerous to be released and has been confined to Larned ever since.
Dudley is considered extremely dangerous. Officers are warning the public to stay away from him if they see him.
Neighbors near the courthouse where Dudley escaped are nervous.
"I'm going to be extra cautious and make sure my family is protected so nothing happens to them," KCK resident Karen Phillips said.
Greg Scott also lives in Kansas City, Kansas.
"I'm very concerned for my wife and for other young ladies because they are at risk," Scott said.
Scott and Phillips were both stunned and disappointed that a convicted sex-offender was not well-guarded.
Monday afternoon, Dudley's cousin Robert Meister spoke to NBC Action News Reporter Larry Seward about Dudley. He believes Dudley charmed his way into unwarranted privileges.
If you have seen Dudley, or know where he might be, you’re urged to call 911 or the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office at (913) 573-2830.
