INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Detectives with the Independence Police Department are trying to determine what lead officers to shoot and kill a man Thursday night.
Police tell 41 Action News two officers were called to the 1600 block of S. Swope Drive around 8:40 p.m. after a disturbance call.
Officer Tom Gentry said when officers arrived, they were confronted by a man who had a weapon. Gentry said the officers told him to drop the gun, but he refused. That's when one of the officers shot him.
"We'll do all types of mapping, forensic evidence, anything that can help put the puzzle together," police spokesman Tom Gentry said.
The man was injured in the shooting, and later died. No officers were injured.
The suspect's name has not been released because officers are still notifying his family.
The two officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
