The two recycling centers in Independence will close permanently on March 31, 2017.

The closing includes the Vista Avenue Recycling Center and the 35th Street Recycling Center.

According to a news release sent by the city manager’s office, deteriorating conditions, blowing debris and overflowing containers caused the sites to close.

“In recent months the city recycling centers have become unmanageable and are contributing to the litter problems in our neighborhoods and commercial corridors,” said Mayor Eileen Weir.

The mayor said the city encourages residents to continue to recycle by using services offered by the private sector.

Independence will continue to offer the Drop-Off Depot at 875 Vista Avenue on the second Saturday of each month, beginning March 11.

According to the release, the average person in the Kansas City metro throws out about seven pounds of waste per day.

The city of Independence is not the only city to close it’s recycling centers.

Fallen values of recyclable goods have forced both cities and schools to close it’s drop-off sites. Last fall, several school districts including Kansas City, Kansas, Independence, Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit, closed their bins to the public.

The city of Lee’s Summit closed it’s recycling center in February 2016.
