INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Sept. 7 marks two years since Genevieve Dodds lost her husband, Elijah Lindstedt.

Dodds said that while it’s been tough for her and her 4-year-old daughter, nothing has reopened their wounds like the night of Aug. 30, when they discovered their car had been broken into.

One of their most valued possessions was stolen — a necklace that had been hanging from the car’s mirror. It contained some of Lindstedt’s ashes.

“I opened the door and I just dropped to the ground,” Dodds told 41 Action News. “I had it for protection, like he is always there.”

Based on scratches and damage to the car’s locks, Dodds said she believes someone forced their way in using a screwdriver. Once inside, she said they ripped out her glove box, stole CDs, broke parts of her car battery and took other items, including the necklace.

Dodd said she believes thieves broke into her car using screwdrivers.

“Now that he’s gone, I am missing a part of him. And it’s really hard,” Dodd said. “I want the ashes back. Everything else is replaceable. His ashes aren’t.”

Anyone with information or who may have found the necklace is asked to call the Independence Police Department or Dodd directly. She can be reached at 816-655-1543.
