Widespread power outage reported in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - 11 p.m. UPDATE | Power has been restored to more than half of impacted customers, with 1,200 remaining without power.

EARLIER | A large area of Independence is without power Thursday night following a fire at a substation.

Independence Power and Light crews are still working to assess the situation, but a fire at a power substation at Lee's Summit Road and Kiger Road has left 3,250 customers without power.

Police say they've received several calls on the outage, which as of 10:15 p.m., was centered south of Interstate 70.

There was no immediate word on when power would be restored.
