As part of 41 Action News' 100-minutes a week commitment to the upcoming presidential election, once a week we will visit cities across the metro to discuss issues on the minds of voters.

This week 41 Action News traveled to Kearney.

We spoke to voters who were lining the streets for the high school’s annual homecoming parade. The top three issues on many people’s minds include safety, the economy and education.

About Kearney

The city of Kearney was established in 1856.

According to the latest census, more than 9,000 people live in the city, and it’s growing. Since 2000, the city’s population has nearly doubled.

2010 Census Figures

  • Population under 18: 32 percent
  • Population over 65: 9 percent
  • Population with a college degree: 33 percent
  • Median household income: $73,600

Kearney’s voting record

The Missouri Secretary of State’s Office does not maintain city-level data for election results.

Kearney is located in Clay County. According to the Missouri Secretary of State’s website, during the last election the county did not vote a straight Republican ticket.

During the 2012 election, voters in Clay County chose Mitt Romney over incumbent-president Barack Obama 53 to 45 percent. However, voters in the county also voted for Senator Claire McCaskill, a democrat, and Governor Jay Nixon, also a democrat.
