Kansas marine injured in Afghanistan honored for his service

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A marine from Kansas who survived an explosion in Afghanistan was awarded a Purple Heart Medal for his service to his country.

Cpl. Shane Evans from Valley Falls received the medal Monday afternoon during an emotional ceremony.

He was injured two years ago during an IED explosion.

He joined the Marine Corps in 2007 and was deployed to Afghanistan twice.

Evans is the second generation of his family to receive the Purple Heart.

He said his family is what has gotten him through everything.

"Family is there 24/7. They are the ones who you go, they like to be everywhere I am, especially on a day like today. It's nice to have your family here," he said.

In addition to the Purple Heart, Evans was also awarded with the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
