KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Police are investigating the murder of a woman was found dead Tuesday.
Police said a relative found the woman's dead body shortly before 2 p.m. near East 47th Street and Overton Avenue, located southeast of the Truman Sports Complex.
"I talk to the officers who work this neighborhood and this is a very quiet neighborhood, family oriented," said Sgt. Darin Snapp with Kansas City police.
Police said the woman was in her early 50s. A relative talked to the woman Monday night but found her dead Tuesday afternoon.
"It appears to be suspicious in nature. There is obvious signs of trauma. It is a big crime scene inside the residence," said Snapp.
The victim's daughter-in-law is shocked by the incident.
"She was a family woman. That is how you would describe her as a family woman," said Kierra Matthews, a daughter-in-law of the victim.
Matthews said she doesn't know anyone who would want to hurt the victim.
Reuel Midgytt lives in the duplex next door to the victim's and said he would regularly see the woman getting the mail, and the pair would occasionally exchange cigarettes.
"She was a real pleasant lady," said Midgytt. "She didn't cause any problems. She pretty much stayed to herself."
Lisa Watson has lived down the street from the crime scene for 13 years and said she's never seen any problems with crime. She said the neighborhood has a lot of kids who play in their front yards and older residents who take walks around the block.
"It's a quite neighborhood. We look out for each other's kids," said Watson.
She says the homicide investigation has her thinking twice.
"It makes me nervous," said Watson. "It makes me really uncomfortable living over here now."
Police cleared the scene at about 9:30 p.m. They interviewed several neighbors but have not released any information on a possible suspect.
