LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - Lee's Summit City Council members approved the first step in adding a new Walmart Super Center on Thursday night.
The proposed 60,000 square foot Walmart would be built at Highway 291 and Highway 150. Residents say they're concerned the super center would lead to an increase in traffic and decrease in property value.
About 100 people attended Thursday's meeting in protest of the proposed plans.
Brandi Riggs lives nearby. She said while the Missouri Department of Transportation recommends a new road be built to improve traffic flow, Walmart has not guaranteed the road will be built.
The council agreed to recommend the city staff draft an amendment that would change the zoning of the 26-acre site to from agricultural to commercial.
Council members will vote on that amendment at their meeting on March 14. If approved, construction could start in 2014.
