Pedestrian killed on highway after vehicle breakdown

LIBERTY, Mo - A Kansas City man who got out of his vehicle after it broke down Saturday evening on Interstate Highway 35 near Liberty was then struck and killed by a passing car, officials said Sunday.

The Missouri Highway Patrol identified the victim as 41-year-old David M. Ellis. They said Ellis had "vehicle issues" about 7:30 p.m. while driving north on I-35 just south of Missouri Highway 152.

A patrol report says Ellis walked about 100 yards along the side of the road before trying to cross the northbound lanes of the highway. That's when he was struck by a car driven by Linda A. McCoy, age 45, of Kansas City, Mo. Investigators said Ellis' body was tossed in the air and landed in the median.

After the initial crash, there were at least two subsequent crashes in the resulting backup, one north and one south of the original crash site. Traffic on the highway was tied up for hours.
