KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A sexual assault was reported on the Maple Woods campus of Metropolitan Community College on Tuesday.
The victim said she was picked up on Barry Road around 1:30 p.m. before being assaulted in the vehicle in a campus parking lot, according to Maple Woods spokesperson Tom Vansaghi. It is unclear whether she got into the car willingly.
She is not a student.
Students and staff received an emergency alert via email and text message.
"It just makes me concerned that this stuff is happening at a place that is suppose to be safe," freshman Bailey Rauber said. "I mean, it's scary."
Cindy Lairson was heading into class when 41 Action News reporter Syed Shabbir approached her for an interview. She demanded to see his credentials first.
"When you approached me, I wanted to run the other way," Lairson told Shabbir. "I wanted to see your credentials. You can't believe anything anybody says."
Both Lairson and Rauber said they plan on carrying mace with them when walking on campus.
The attacker is described as a white male who is 5 feet, 2 inches tall and 250 pounds with white or gray hair parted down the middle. He was last seen wearing sunglasses and flip flops and driving a grayish-white late model Buick LaSabre sedan.
Anyone with information is asked to call MCC's tips hotline at 816-604-2847.
A student reported a sexual assault on the same campus in December. In that case, the suspect was armed with a knife. He was never apprehended.
