Kingsville teen falls off watercraft, drowns in Cass County pond

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. - A family gathering turned tragic Sunday afternoon at a pond in rural Cass County, Mo.

Major Jeff Weber of the Cass County Sheriff's Department said 17-year-old Kalan Littlefield of Kingsville, Mo., drowned around 3:10 p.m. at a private pond at 31310 South McClain Road, south of Harrisonville.

Weber said Littlefield was riding on a personal watercraft with another individual when both fell off. Weber said Littlefield struggled in the water and went under the surface.

The second person tried to rescue Littlefield but could not reach him. Weber said Littlefield was not able to swim and that neither individuals were wearing a life jacket.

The Lee's Summit Underwater Rescue team recovered Littlefield's body later Sunday afternoon.

Weber said Littlefield was at attending a family get-together when he drowned.

Littlefield had once lived in Raytown, Mo. He attended school in the Raytown school district in ninth grade and part of his 10th grade year, a Raytown district spokesperson said.
