NASA releases images of solar flare

NASA has released time lapse video of last week's solar flare.

The solar flare happened on Thursday, but the resulting geomagnetic storm didn't hit Earth until the weekend.

The burst of energy was low on the scale for such storms, but it was still strong enough to pose a mild concern for high-frequency radios or power systems in high-latitude areas.

People were also able to see the northern lights further south than usual.

NASA says this kind of solar activity is normal.

In fact, the sun is nearing the peak of its 11-year solar cycle, which scientists expect to arrive in 2013 or 2014
