Hurricane Sandy continues to strengthen slightly as the storm is churning just off the East Coast.
New video released by NASA shows a time lapse of Hurricane Sandy off the coast of the Carolinas. The National Weather Service reported maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour in the area. Those may strengthen a bit more before the storm makes full landfall late Monday or early Tuesday.
Because of Sandy's size and the dense population, forecasters expected about 50 million people to feel the storm's effects. Hundreds of thousands of people, including more than 300,000 in New York, have been asked to leave their homes.
For days, government and emergency management officials have pleaded with residents to be prepared, take precautions and heed storm warnings.
Sandy has already proven deadly, killing at least 67 people in the Caribbean last week -- 51 of those in Haiti alone.
