Governor Brownback tours storm damage

TOPEKA, Kan. - Kansas Governor Sam Brownback met with residents and federal authorities on Sunday afternoon. He already declared the storms a State Disaster, but federal authorities will have to determine if the damage will be eligible for federal funding. Brownback said initial reports indicate ninety-seven tornado sightings in the state, a weather record for Kansas.

"The citizenry of Kansas did an excellent job they paid attention they got out of the way of storms and as a result of that we had no fatalities," Brownback said.

Brownback said the Wichita area was hardest hit. Emergency managers said at least twenty-four homes were destroyed, twelve people had minor injuries, and hundreds of homes had some damage. The initial damage amount is about $283-million.

The National Weather Service categorized the storm and EF-3. Dozens of homes and businesses were still without power around 7 p.m. on Sunday.
