Kan. farmers explain reality of drought

BUCYRUS, Kan. - The Guettermans are a fifth-generation farming family living around Bucyrus, Kan.

The family's corn is ready for harvest a month early. They'll be harvesting in the next week, hoping to get 30 percent of the crop they planted.

While they're harvesting the corn, they'll be hoping for rain. Their soybean crop may not make it if rain doesn't fall in the next 10 days.

The Guettermans are comparing this drought to the one they experienced in 1980. Back then, they remember getting some late August rain which saved the soybeans.

The family does have crop insurance, but they said that just helps them keep farming next year.
