Osawatomie swimming pool has leaked dry

OSAWATOMIE, Kan. - A lot of kids practically live at the swimming pool in the summer months, but in Osawatomie, Kan., they will have to find a new place to go.

The 50-year-old public pool has been leaking for many years. The problem has gotten so bad, it now loses 60 gallons per minute. Recreation director Ryan Crowley said that's enough to drain the pool in eight hours.

Finally, he made the decision to close the pool last May.

"We lined the pipes, lined the well, brought in different contractors and we were unable to fix it," Crowley said. "We kept putting Band-Aids on it and then it was just too much to overcome."

Without a pool of their own, Osawatomie swimmers spent last summer either at the Miami County YMCA indoor pool or traveling to neighboring towns.

Osawatomie wants to keep patrons in town with a new pool of their own. Last week, however, the city council rejected the $2.8 million proposal for a new pool, which would have gone on the April ballot.

"We would have had zero-depth entry, spray features, slides," Crowley said.

Deadria Lewis got used to driving her family from Osawatomie to Paola last summer, and said she will do it again this year.

"It would be nice if they had a pool like Paola, but I understand it's way expensive," Lewis said.

Crowley hopes to try the pool proposal again this fall.
