Tornado damages KS homes, no reported injuries

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports about 20 homes were damaged after a tornado moved through Dickinson County Wednesday night.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the tornado touched down near Solomon, Kansas, around 7 p.m. At 7:29 p.m., the tornado, described as being approximately ½ mile wide, entered Dickinson County.

Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner said at the moment there are no injuries and no deaths. 

The Kansas Highway Patrol said during the storm numerous emergency personnel followed the storm, checking damaged homes for injured or trapped victims.

About 20 homes were damaged with six being total losses. More than 100 homes are without power in the area.

The Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at the Abilene Community Center on NW 8th Street where displaced families could seek shelter for the night.

According to the Associated Press, a tornado hit this area in 2008. It reports:

"The twister that hit Chapman June 11, 2008, tore a path of destruction six blocks wide. Officials said one woman died, 100 homes were destroyed or heavily damaged, and 80 percent of the town was damaged."
