Authorities identify Missouri hiker found dead in national park in Utah

MOAB, Utah (AP) - Authorities have identified a hiker found dead at Canyonlands National Park as 73-year-old Grant Welland of St. Louis.

The University of Missouri's website says Welland was a retired professor.

Welland's body was recovered Saturday in Horseshoe Canyon, famous for its ancient rock art. The remote canyon is part of a disconnected unit of the national park.

At first, searchers found his vehicle at a trailhead. A helicopter spotted his body.

Wayne County sheriff's deputies say Welland was carrying enough water and had good hiking shoes. The Utah medical examiner will determine a cause of death.

Welland was hiking alone. He was reported missing Friday, five days after he failed to leave the canyon.
