CARROLLTON, Mo. - The sight of towering flames on the town square was enough to get a lot of people out of bed Monday morning in Carrollton, Mo. The fire, called in just after 3 a.m., destroyed two century-old buildings housing businesses.
Fire chief Curtis Shields said crews were able to salvage the contents inside the Carroll County Title Company. But next door, the "House of my Father" thrift store, is a devastating loss to the community.
"They ran that business to raise money for victims of domestic violence. It's completely destroyed," Shields said.
Crews from five different departments contained the fire within four hours, and Shields said the damage could have been worse if not for a fire wall separating a hardware store from the flames.
Shields said the lack of a fire wall helped the flames spread quickly within the buildings that were destroyed.
A third building, which is vacant, received minor smoke and water damage.
A cause has not been determined and no one was injured.
