Senator John McCain (R-AZ) received the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award on Tuesday.

This award is given each year to "a prominent individual who is recognized for exemplary service to their community, the nation, and the world," according to the organization that presents the award.

"Senator McCain was selected to receive our award because of his many years of leadership on critical issues relating to international and military policy," said Karl Zobrist, president of the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation, in a press release. "In delivering his views with candor and sincerity, he exemplifies both the spirit and high principles of President Truman."

McCain, a Navy veteran and former Republican presidential candidate, has been a senator for 30 years and currently chairs the Committee on Armed Services.

He received the award at the Truman Foundation's annual luncheon, where the organization also presented scholarships for international studies.

The Good Neighbor Award has commemorated Truman's birthday each year since 1973 and honors "President Truman's keen interest in education as a means to promote better relations among all nations," said a press release.
