Missouri to offer tax refund debit cards for 2012 returns

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Revenue announced Friday that residents would have the option of receiving their tax refunds on a debit card.

State Treasurer Clint Zweifel made the announcement in a news release. The release said taxpayers would have the option to check a "debit card" box on the refund line of their 2012 returns. After the card is received, they recipient would have to activate it by phone or online and a PIN would have to be created.

Zweifel said the card would have no fees attached and taxpayers could use it anywhere Visa cards are accepted. There are fees if the money is taken at an ATM not associated with UMB, MoneyPass and Chase.

Residents will still have the option to receive a check by mail or an electronic deposit into a bank account.
