Nonprofit grocery store opens in Missouri

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - A first-of-its-kind grocery store is helping feed needy families in Missouri.

Second Harvest Community Food Bank opened the Fresh Start store in St. Joseph on Monday. Fresh Start is the nation's first nonprofit grocery store associated with a food bank.

Customers can pick from a number of products -- including free, nutritious food.

"We've evolved this from the traditional pantry model where you would choose donated items that are available for free," explained interim executive director Chad Higdon. "We've got a mix now of donated product that's still available for free, but it's in a shopping environment where there's also fresh fruits and vegetables, and milk."

To shop at Fresh Start, customers must meet certain poverty guidelines and sign up for a membership card.
