Train derails near Blue Springs

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. - As New Year's Eve approached, Kansas City Southern Railroad crews were working to flip over a train in Blue Springs.

Four locomotives and seven railcars derailed around 10 p.m. Sunday near Adams Dairy Parkway.

Luckily, no one was hurt, but fuel leaked from one of the engines, and two of the cars spilled soybeans and plastic pellets across a field.

Goldie Williams, who lives nearby, says the sound of the train going off the tracks was the loudest noise she had ever heard.

"I mean, it sounded like a big crash," Williams said. "It sounded like a rumbling in the sky, and I thought somebody had wrecked outside."

Railroad official said it would take several days to clear the cars.

Investigators are still working to figure out what caused the derailment.
