Train hits car in Warrensburg, injures child and adult

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - A 43-year-old woman and her 3-year-old granddaughter were seriously injured when an Amtrak train struck their sport-utility vehicle in Warrensburg Sunday evening.

Johnson County emergency personnel said the woman and child were in a Ford Escape that was hit by the train. Both were taken by helicopter ambulance to Kansas City hospitals with serious injuries.

The child was in intensive care unit at Children's Mercy Hospital Sunday night, while her grandmother was undergoing surgery at Truman Medical Center.

Police later identified the woman as Catherine Downing and the child as Rebecca Langner.

Warrensburg police said the SUV failed to yield to the train before it was hit on the driver's side, causing the vehicle to flip on its side.

Video of the accident shows the crossing arms were working. The woman drove under the arms as they came down on the rear of her vehicle, possibly trying to beat the train.

The Amtrak train had passengers on it, and may have been going at full speed, according to police.

The train's conductor was said to have removed Langner from the vehicle.

The accident happened around 5:20 p.m. Sunday. Authorities said the vehicle was removed and the train moved on at 6:30 p.m.

The child is in a medically-induced coma and both woman and child are expected to live.
