VIDEO: MoDOT blasts Blanchette Missouri River Bridge

ST CHARLES, Mo. - More than 4 million pounds of steel fell into the Missouri River Tuesday as the Missouri Department of Transportation destroyed a bridge along Interstate 70 near St. Louis.

The blasting of the westbound Blanchette Missouri River Bridge was part of a $63 million MoDOT project.

Both directions of Interstate 70 were closed in St. Charles between Route 94 and Interstate 270 from 10 to 11 a.m. while crews worked to clear the rubble left behind on the eastbound bridge.

According to MoDOT, the blast dropped over 1,000 feet of truss, including 4.5 million pounds of steel into the Missouri River.

The project will replace everything on the bridge except for the piers. The bridge is set to reopen by fall 2013.
