CAIRO (AP) - Egypt's state news agency says clashes between soldiers and police and Islamists protesting the ouster of the president left 51 protesters dead.
The news agency quotes Mohammed Sultan, head of emergency services, also saying 435 were wounded, mostly from live ammunition and birdshot. The bloodshed Monday outside the Republican Guard headquarters in Cairo also left two policemen and one soldier dead.
The military said it was protecting the military installation and personnel from an attack by gunmen among the protesters. Ousted President Mohammed Morsi's supporters say the military's attack on their days-long sit-in was unprovoked.
