At least 4 dead in South Pacific tsunami triggered by 8.0-magnitude earthquake

SYDNEY (AP) - At least four people died and dozens of homes were destroyed when a tsunami of about five feet hit the Solomon Islands Wednesday.

Disaster teams were struggling to reach four villages hit by the tsunami in the South Pacific island chain. The tsunami was triggered by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake.

The prime minister's office says many villagers had headed to higher ground as a precaution after the earthquake struck Santa Cruz Island.

Authorities canceled warnings for tsunamis on more distant coasts.

One of the people presumed dead was fishing in a dugout canoe, while a local hospital asked half its patients to leave because it's located near the shoreline.
